How to Pick the Right Long Term Health Care
Insurance
When picking the right long term health care insurance there are two major categories to consider: 1) a managed
care plan, AKA network based coverage or 2) an indemnity plan, AKA private health care insurance. Both options have
their benefits, but the main thing to consider when picking the right long term health care insurance plan for you
is whether or not the plan covers the kinds of long term health care that you will need through the years so that
you will not encounter unexpected costly expenses if/when your income is significantly reduced or if you should
need assisted care.
The Different Kinds of Long Term Health Care
When picking out a long term health care insurance plan, you have to think about what kinds of long term health
care you will need at different times in your life, i.e. your needs 20 years from now will be different from what
they are today. One kind of long term health care you have to consider later in life is home care - care given in
your home, often given by relatives initially and later paid professionals or volunteers.
Often this kind of care is short-term, but sometimes it turns into a long-term situation as sickness progresses.
The various long-term health care insurance providers call this type of care by different names depending on the
company, but it is usually referred to as hospice care or home health care.
Your long term health care insurance plan should also cover community services like day programs for senior
citizens. An adult day care center, for example, is a place where you can drop off your senior loved one for care
and activities during the day while you are at work. When you get off work, you can go and pick your loved one up.
Such a clause in the plan could also cover food and transportation for senior citizens who are more self-sufficient
and still living in their home but need assistance with such services.
Assisted living communities give 24-hour assistance to their residents, often including supervision and meals if
need be. Assisted living communities should definitely be covered in your long term health care insurance plan just
in case you need it someday. Check to see what kind of out-of-pocket expenses you are looking at in the plan, such
as deductibles and co-pays so that you can plan ahead and have that money set aside for a rainy day.
Nursing home care is by far the most popular coverage when it comes to long-term health care insurance plans
because quite a few assisted living communities also offer full-time nursing home care for special needs residents.
This kind of care covers every aspect of the senior citizen's life, such as meals, medication and bathing, along
with any sort of medical treatment short of hospitalization.
